About Gabriela

My name is Gabriela Morales, I am originally from Mexico City.

After moving to Australia in 2014 with my husband Steve, originally from Melbourne, we moved to the beautiful seaside city of Redcliffe, Queensland.

I grew up learning everything about food from my Mum, whom I’ve named my Mexican Cookings Lessons in honour of.

Doña Terecua’s Recipes translates to: Madam Teresa’s Recipes in English.

My Story

My name is Gabriela Morales, I am originally from Mexico City. But I am now married to Steve, originally from Melbourne, living in Redcliffe, Queensland.
When I was 21 years old, I went to London to study English where I lived for a year and a half.
I had the opportunity to travel to Bahrain in the Middle East to become a flight attendant – which I did for nearly 17 years.
It was during this time I met Steve, who was an Air Traffic Controller in Bahrain. We eventually married in CanCun, Mexico and before moving to Muscat, Oman. A year later we moved to Christchurch, New Zealand.
In 2014 Steve’s work brought us to Brisbane where we’ve been since. But it was our time in New Zealand hosting international students stay with us from all corners of the globe that we showed me how much I enjoyed sharing our home with others.
This encouraged us to continue having guests here in Redclffe. A peninsula city just North of Brisbane, Redcliffe is surrounded by the ocean. Gaby’s Hacienda is less than a block to the beach and is a beautiful 3 bedroom Queenslander with wide verandahs and bayside breezes.
We both come from big families and from our experience of travelling we know the feeling of not knowing anybody, and missing that feeling of home, when you are in a different country or town.

Bed & Breakfast

This encouraged us to continue having guests here in Redclffe. A peninsula city just North of Brisbane, Redcliffe is surrounded by the ocean. Gaby’s Hacienda is only a block from the beach and is a beautiful 3 bedroom Queenslander with wide verandahs and bayside breezes.
We started as an Air B&B property in Februrary 2015. It has been a fantastic experience! Instead of us travelling around the world, people now travel to us from around the world.
As English is my second language and travelling to many places that I couldn’t speak the local language, I always keep in mind that our guests at Gaby’s Hacienda need to feel welcome. They deserve to be looked after and have a good experience with us. We are always happy to have you.

Cooking Lessons

In 2016, my friends encouraged me to think about sharing my Mexican culture, language and passion for sharing stories with others in a more formal way. In October that year, Doña Terecua’s Recipes was launched.
I am not a trained chef – I am a home cook and teach others how to cook my own family recipes passed down to me from my Great-Grandmother to my Grandmother, my Grandmother to my Mum – and then to me.

Now

We love being active. Living on the Redcliffe peninsula allows us to do that. We enjoy being part of the local running club, and attend Boot Camp. I regularly go to a yoga group on the beach, and Steve is part of a cycling group.
We love to meet people and share stories from other lives and other places. Some of our guests have become really good friends, they are returning guests and keep in touch across the years.

Mexico is known for the hospitality,
we have a saying:
“Mi casa, es tu casa” (My house, is your house)
